Course Description

Introduction

This comprehensive program aims to provide participants with clinical information and “Hands-On” training in utilising various fibre reinforced materials to construct fully functional anterior and posterior bridges. In addition, dentists will be trained on cost saving aesthetic composite techniques utilising state of the art strength resins to allow these functional bridges to blend in seamlessly with the surrounding dentition.

Fibre-Reinforced Compositre Resin Bridges

Day 1 — Dr Ian Meyers

In recent years, fibre-reinforced resin composites have gained greater acceptance in clinical and laboratory applications. The combination of good aesthetics and high fracture toughness, as well as enabling minimally invasive procedures, provides the clinician with many alternative treatment options for patients. The most significant advantages been cost effectiveness, conservation of tooth tissue and reduced treatment time.

Fibre-reinforced bridges can also be very useful in replacing missing anterior and posterior teeth, either as a short term solution or for long term aesthetic and functional outcome. In many cases, the short term use over healing implant sites provides a more comfortable and acceptable alternative to partial dentures. These fibre reinforced bridges can be made directly on teeth or pre-made in the laboratory providing great flexibility in available techniques.

This course will provide clinical information and hands-on training with various fibre-reinforced materials combined with a range of aesthetic and high strength composite resins. Techniques for creating aesthetic anterior and fully functional posterior fibre-reinforced bridges will be discussed and demonstrated. Participants will be able to construct direct and semi-direct bridges using various fibre-reinforced materials. In addition, material handling, clinical hints and tips will be highlighted to assist in ensuring successful patient outcomes.

Aesthetic Composite Techniques

Day 2 — Dr Anthony Mak

This practical interactive course is designed to teach dentists how to apply contemporary direct composite techniques that can then be utilised to produce a truly high quality aesthetic result. Understanding new generation composite materials, particularly their colour properties and how to effectively colour match - which can considerably shorten chair-side time as well as produce stunning aesthetic outcomes. In this hands on course, you will learn that composite layering does not need to be time consuming or complicated and you will be shown all the tips and tricks to achieve outstanding restorations.

Prof Ian Meyers

Prof Meyers is currently in general dental practice in Brisbane, Australia and has honorary professorial positions with The University of Queensland School of Dentistry, and James Cook University School of Medicine and Dentistry. Ian has worked in both public and private dental clinics and has been involved with The University of Queensland since 1988. He was the inaugural Colgate Chair of General Dental Practice from 2001 – 2009, and then Chief Dental Officer for Queensland Health from 2009 – 2010 and the 2010 President of the Queensland Branch of the Australian Dental Association. He is a product consultant to a range of dental companies and has been a member and chairman of the ADA Dental Instruments, Materials and Equipment Committee. He is a member of the International Association for Dental Research, Chairman of the Australian Dental Research Foundation Research Advisory Committee and a member of the editorial board of The Australian Dental Journal and several other international journals. His major interests include adhesive restorative dental materials, diagnosis and management of the worn dentition, minimum intervention dentistry, and teaching and clinical development in general practice dentistry.

Dr. Anthony Mak

A highly skilled dental surgeon and dental practitioner, Dr Anthony Mak has many years of experience working in some of Sydney's most renowned dental practices with some of Sydney's finest dental specialists. He now brings his unique skills in the fields of dental implants, cosmetic and restorative dentistry to his exciting new "W dental" practice at Woollahra. Dr Mak is committed to the improvement of dental health awareness in his community. As a past graduate of Sydney Boys High School and the University of Sydney, Dr Mak has a good understanding of the key issues that directly affect the community around his Woollahra practice. An outstanding graduate of dentistry from the University of Sydney, Dr Mak's dedication to perfection and tireless effort won him numerous accolades including the W. Alan Grainger Memorial Prize and the Astra Zeneca Pharmaceuticals Prize. He also won the John Stephen Hill Memorial Prize, the Dr Henry Bruce Maxwell Prize and the esteemed Rudolf Gunz University Medal. Dr Mak is a current member of the Australian Dental Association, Australian Osseointegration Society, International Association of Orthodontics and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and he was also a lecturer and clinical associate with the University of Sydney. Having an insatiable thirst for information and continued improvement has seen Dr Mak complete extensive additional study including a post-graduate diploma in Oral Implants at The University of Sydney. He has also travelled to New Zealand and the USA to further his knowledge in the latest techniques of implants, orthodontics and cosmetic dentistry. Dr Mak's extensive understanding of the specialist areas of orthodontics, implants, root canal and restorative technique means that his dental practice at Woollahra is not only able to cater for all aspects of general dentistry, but they will directly manage any complex dental requirement or reconstruction.
